Mohan Bhagwat’s Message in Kerala: Preserve Hindu Traditions and Reject Western Influence

RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat Urges Hindus to Embrace Tradition at Hindu Unity Conference

kerala: Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat has called upon Hindus to uphold their cultural traditions by wearing traditional attire, speaking their native languages, and consuming local cuisine. He made these remarks while inaugurating the ‘Hindu Unity Conference’ in Kerala’s Pathanamthitta district, an event organized as part of the annual Cherukolpuzha Hindu Convention.

Bhagwat emphasized that ‘Dharma’ is the essence of Hinduism and should be practiced at an individual level. He encouraged Hindu families to come together at least once a week for prayers and discussions to ensure that their lifestyle aligns with their cultural heritage.

“We must reflect on whether our language, travel choices, and attire remain rooted in our traditions. We should visit and support those in our communities who need help. It is essential to refrain from speaking English and instead embrace our native languages. Our diet should be based on locally available cuisine, and while attending events, we should opt for traditional clothing instead of Western outfits,” Bhagwat stated.

The RSS chief, currently on a two-day visit to Kerala, also launched a book on Sree Narayana Guru, a revered spiritual leader and social reformer from the state. His visit follows an earlier trip from 16 to 21 January as part of the RSS’s organizational activities.

Call for Unity and Responsible Strength

Bhagwat underscored the importance of Hindu society uniting for its survival and strengthening itself as a community. However, he stressed that such strength must be exercised responsibly and should not cause harm to others.

“Religion has often been a source of conflict across the world, as many people believe their faith is superior to others. Hinduism is different because it adheres to Sanatan Dharma, which calls for unity and coexistence,” he asserted.

He further stated that religious practices should be followed in accordance with established principles and that outdated or harmful customs should be abandoned. Citing Sree Narayana Guru, Bhagwat reiterated that caste discrimination and untouchability are not part of Dharma and must be eradicated.

The Cherukolpuzha Hindu Convention

The Cherukolpuzha Hindu Convention, organized by the Kerala-based Hindumatha Mahamandalam, was established in 1913 by social reformer Chattambi Swamikal. The organization was founded with the aim of addressing social inequalities, including untouchability, and promoting reforms within Hinduism, particularly in relation to traditional practices and the empowerment of women and marginalized communities.

Now in its 113th edition, the event was inaugurated by Kerala Governor Rajendra Arlekar in the presence of Water Resources Minister Roshy Augustine, Pathanamthitta MP Anto Antony, and Leader of Opposition in the Kerala Assembly, V.D. Sateesan. Hindumatha Mahamandalam’s vice president, advocate K. Haridas, expressed pride in hosting Bhagwat at the prestigious convention.

Bhagwat’s address reinforces the RSS’s vision of preserving Hindu cultural values while advocating for unity and social reform. His remarks are likely to spark discussions on the balance between cultural preservation and modernization in contemporary Indian society.
