A Sacred Pilgrimage Site for Millions
The Sabarimala temple attracts millions of devotees annually, not only from Kerala but also from Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and northern states, as well as from abroad. The temple experiences its peak footfall during the Mandala Kala Puja and Makaravilakku Puja, both held in the (November–January).
Last year, the Mandala Kala Puja began on November 15, with the temple opening at 5 PM on November 15. The overwhelming number of devotees during the Sabarimala season led to long waiting times, prompting temple authorities to implement strict online booking measures to manage the crowd effectively.
Crowd Control Measures and Record Devotee Participation
To maintain order and improve the darshan experience, authorities restricted entry to only those with prior online reservations. Unlike previous years, spot booking was not permitted, and only 80,000 devotees per day were allowed to enter the temple premises.
Following the completion of the Makaravilakku rituals, the temple was officially closed on January 20.
