Sabarimala Flyover to be Removed: Everything You Need to Know About the New Darshan System
The Devaswom Board has announced plans to remove the flyover darshan system at Sabarimala, allowing for direct access to darshan for pilgrims. This new system, expected to improve the overall experience, will be implemented starting March 14, coinciding with the opening of the Meenamasa Puja.

The Board's initiative is aimed at enhancing the pilgrimage experience by ensuring a smoother and more comfortable darshan for all devotees. The previous system, which involved climbing the 18th step, turning left, and waiting in line on the flyover to reach the steps, will be fully replaced.
Under the new arrangement, pilgrims will be able to pass on both sides of the flagpole, proceeding through the Balikkalpura and offering a moment of prayer to Ayyappa for at least 30 seconds. This change will provide a more meaningful darshan experience, as opposed to the brief two- or three-second view previously allowed when passing through the flyover to the Sopanam.
In addition, the Devaswom Board has addressed concerns regarding potential disruptions between pilgrims and police. The new system aims to prevent such altercations and ensure a smoother flow of devotees in front of the temple.
A dedicated walkway will be constructed to separate the two lines of pilgrims. Those entering from the left will ascend to a slightly elevated platform, where they can turn left to experience the darshan. Pilgrims approaching from the right will proceed at ground level and also turn left, ensuring there is no congestion or overlap between the two groups.
Importantly, the new system does not alter the temple's Tantric structure or any associated calculations, and has received approval from the Tantri. Currently, devotees pass through three lines in front of the shrine, and the Board has responded to complaints regarding crowding and congestion in this area.
The Devaswom Board has also secured permission from the High Court for this change, with the flyover system remaining in place for emergency use during the peak pilgrimage season like mandala-Makaravilakku time.
