Sabarimala Devotees Struck by Food Poisoning: Hotel Shut Down in Pampa

Pathanamthitta – Authorities have closed a hotel in Pampa, Pathanamthitta, after ten Ayyappa devotees fell ill due to suspected food poisoning. The incident, which occurred on Saturday, has raised concerns about food safety at establishments catering to pilgrims visiting the Sabarimala temple.

The hotel, Coffee Land, located at Triveni Manappuram in Pampa and owned by Omanakkuttan from Kollam, was shuttered following an inspection led by the Pampa Duty Magistrate. The devotees, who had consumed food at the hotel on either Friday or Saturday, sought medical treatment at Sannidhanam hospital on Saturday after experiencing symptoms of food poisoning.

Acting swiftly, a team arrived at the hotel at 11:40 AM to investigate. They verified the shop’s license, which was issued in the owner’s name, and examined the premises and food items. Officials from the Food Safety Department collected samples for further analysis. Citing the sale of contaminated food that endangered lives and caused illness, authorities ordered the immediate closure of the hotel.

The Pampa Police have registered a case against the hotel licensee for violating food safety standards, which led to the devotees’ illness. The incident has sparked calls for stricter monitoring of eateries in the area to ensure the safety of pilgrims flocking to Sabarimala for darshan.

As investigations continue, authorities are urging devotees to exercise caution and report any concerns about food quality at local establishments. The closure serves as a stark reminder of the importance of maintaining hygiene and safety standards, especially in areas frequented by large numbers of visitors.
